What is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping is one of the oldest and most globally practiced medical treatments in human history. Cupping therapy is well known as a treatment in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Due to its amazing benefits, Contemporary Cupping Techniques have evolved out of this ancient art and are finding their way into massage therapy centers, athletic training rooms, and alternative medicine facilities.
Cupping uses gentle suction to lift and release muscles and surrounding tissues. In my practice, I incorporate a variety of cupping techniques, as needed by each individual, into full body massage sessions. Cupping can be applied much like a hands on massage with the suction cups gliding over areas of the body. Cups may also be placed over a problem area and left stationary for a period of 5-15 minutes while other areas are massaged.
Cupping has a broad range of applications and can be used almost anywhere on the body. Cupping can quickly and gently release muscle tightness, reduce pain, enhance blood flow to restricted areas, and move stagnant fluid. Cupping is also a less painful way to release trigger points, fascial restrictions, scar tissue and tissues over bony areas that are difficult to massage (such as the rib cage and sacrum). Cupping can even decrease the appearance of cellulite. Facial Cupping can act as a mini face-lift, brightening the skin, toning and lifting sagging tissue, and plumping wrinkles and lines. The benefits of Cupping have a cumulative effect, helping our bodies to stay balanced when confronted with the many stresses of our daily lives.
My clients report that the Cupping treatments feel releasing and relaxing and the relaxation can last throughout even their most hectic day. Many clients tell me Cupping therpy is much less invasive and painful than deep tissue massage yet brings about a more profound release of tight and painful areas. Here is what one client had to say about her cupping treatment:
“The cupping experience was indeed novel even for one who has benefitted from massage for many years. Releasing as well as relaxing back and shoulder muscles hard to reach with even deep tissue massage, its effects were dramatic, immediate, and prolonged, lasting some 36 hours.”
